Q & A :|: F A Q

0. How does this game work?
This game is strongly comment oriented; actions within comments aren't recommended unless it's previously agreed upon by all participating players. Also, please remember to take a look at the calender for curse days (caused by your local deities... maybe). Bear in mind that the days are NOT mandatory; you are allowed to choose whether or not your character gets affected by them. Suggestions are also welcome, commonly posted as comments on the calendar page. For everything else, PLEASE READ THIS FAQ. It's necessary to know what an RP is about if you're going to be playing within it.

1. I've read the comm userinfo & I still don't get it.
Basically, pick a character & choose whether or not your character's already in the city or not. Then have them run around & find stuff out about the city, meet other characters, make new friends & etc. Or have them try & save the world or help destroy it- or just have them party all night long.

2. Are OCs allowed?
Yes, original characters are allowed in this rp. You may apply for one here.

3. Can we apply for real people?
Anime/manga/book/television/movie characters are all allowed.

4. Let's talk money?
Accounting is your friend. OR IS IT.

5. What's the countdown?
Who really knows. There are those who say the countdown is to the end of the world, others who believe it is nothing more than a clock. So not only is your character STUCK in the city, he/she has to hear the ticking of that clock, but they'll only hear it when they're alone. It's enough to drive someone mad ;)

6. So, the city's for the dead too?
If you wish to pick up a character that has already died within a series, you may. The city grew up on swallowing souls (or did it?). Their souls help it live & in return it lets them live within its realm.

7. Okay lady, what the hell is the carousel for?
The basic theory behind the carousel is that it's connected directly to the clock; the underground's pulse. It winds it up & keeps it moving. The underground mechanism is difficult to find due to the labyrinth of tunnels, trains, & unsavory critters, and even more difficult to understand. Before you ask, no, you can't destroy it. It has a fail-safe device within its core that will . . . why don't you try to find out?

8. Why would my character want to get into the city?
To stop the end of the world. For good. For justice. To escape their pasts. To run away from something or somebody. For whatever reason you can come up with. Sometimes it's not about good or evil, but having a good time & the city can give you that & more.

9. Alright, how do I get INTO the city?
Again, up to you. Your character could have died & been sent there. Your character might've pulled a Narnia & ended up in the city by walking through a wardrobe. Or your character could have dreamed themselves there. It's all good by us, because there are an infinite amount of ways to get in, but far less to get out.

10. Are there ways out of the city?
Yes there are, but they are few and far between. It's also a matter of finding the right one for your character. But remember, once that exit is used it may not be available. ever. again. It may not even be an exit and all and your character may wind up right back where they started: at the carousel.

11. How can I find an exit?
Up to you! Work with the scenario. Give up your heart up or a handful of memories for a 'key' that doubles as a diviner stick that finds an exit to your character's specific world. But remember this: characters can leave, but they'll soon find out that it's staying away that's hard. Addiction is addiction. If your character's tasted the sweets of the city once, they'll grow to crave them. Temptation works in mysterious ways & it's only natural to want to go back for one more taste, one more wish or drink on the house.

12. My character has supernatural powers. Will this allow him/her to leave the city?
No. Your character will not be able to leave once he/she enters the city unless they find an exit. Their powers will still function within the city walls. But any attempt to leave the city via force etc. will be dealt with firmly, perhaps by a massive shock sending them back to the carousel or by a gentle drop off at their home in The City with a severe memory-wipe.

13. Will those powers allow my character to contact/locate someone within the city?
Yes. But reception will be fuzzy & faint. The most your character will be able to ascertain is that the person they are searching for can be found within the city.

14. So does this mean we have to save the world(s)?
Maybe, maybe not? If your character's into that kind of thing. If your character's a baddie, then no. But they can interfere with the information gathering/world saving if they want & if your character's neutral then have them uh, interact & party it up or whatever. The City takes no side in saviors or destroyers, The City already knows the outcome.

15. What kind of nutjob created that fscking clock?
Now why would the deities or The City answer a question like that? Neither would we ♥

16. My character needs more places to go/events.
If you have any suggestions for celebrations/parties/events, please feel free to tell us. In fact, we encourage you to tell us by commenting, e-mailing, or IMing us. We think it's awesome for community members to partake in the planning/building of the city!

17. Where do our characters live once they enter the city?
Anywhere they wish, but many have centered on 12 specific buildings that surround The Square. Each building is numbered and holds an infinite number of rooms. You are free to choose whichever building you wish, or any other location of your choosing. But take a look here; the numbers = buildings.

The carousel spins all the time- SO! Notice anything interesting?

18. That looks pretty small. How big is this place?
That picture is like a side view mirror. It doesn't quite capture the exact size of the place. The City is large enough to require its own subway system. The City proper is a metropolitan sprawl with dangerous ghettos and beautiful villas, but The City also includes its surrounding forest and sea. This place is HUGE, but sometimes it seems to be contracting, other times expanding. One never truly knows. Your character can choose to travel by foot, by horse, by metro, or they can fly and teleport if it's within their capability. Note however that The City does NOT have airports or seaports, curiouser and curiouser.

19. Can characters be outside the city at the beginning of the rp, & then end up in it soon enough?
Of course! You can start your character within the city or outside of the city. The only characters that don't have a choice in the matter are the dead ones.

20. Do we really want to know what happened to question 20?
...elephant seals. Always the God damned elephant seals

21. What happens when a character is killed within the city walls?
Go HERE to read about City!Death.

22. Is it possible to access outside sources? Databases, news reports from within the city?
It's possible to access outside sources, yes. The fountain, for example, can also be used to tap into the outside world/news reports/databases etc. but only if the character is determined enough & focuses hard enough to want it. How your character gains outside information is left up to you the player, essentially, however it should be hard and difficult.

23. Is it possible for a character to know they're dead within the city? [if they're unaware of it]
Yes, this is left up to the player. It could be as simple as another character from the canon knowing your character should be dead, or your character could gaze into the fountain and have the truth revealed. The possibilities are endless.

24. Do items [Sprite Ocarina, Antidote, ect] still function within the city?
Yes, they still function within the city.

25. If a character does manage to stop the carousel prematurely, what will happen?
Now that would depend on the hows and whys of the operation! Such an event is treated on a case-by-case basis and the effects of it will be posted as an announcement. You would not be able to miss it.

26. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask them here!

You can kill a few NPCs without having to come to us. Big amounts of NPC death would have to be cleared with the mods (more than 3 at a time is an easy guideline) and soliciting player involvement is always a great idea. Go for it.

Okay, I must be retarded or something, but.

Exactly what is the premise? Is there a premise? Or is it just 'dreamtown seemingly controlled by clock, do whatever you'd like as long as it's IC and not godmoding'? It sounds really interesting, but is that the basic thing?

To a large extent, yes. The City is controlled by six "deities" who are probably behind the curses that are visited on the citizens on a regular basis.

The theory among the citizens is that the negative emotion caused by the curses helps power the clock that is the center of the City. Possibly, maybe, no one in the City knows, when the clock hits 12:00, all worlds end.

Until then, people live, curses happen, play goes on. We're pretty free-form overall. Try to stay IC for context, have respect for your fellow players, and you're golden.

I was just wondering---does the Network contain the logs of people who were here and left, or are they just gone for good?

Some records are still available, but we ask you to use such information extremely sparingly and carefully and whenever possible, DO speak with the player of whatever character whose journal you are thinking to reference. To do otherwise is a bit of a breach of etiquette and wanders into the realm of infomodding and we don't want that.

Question! ...when a person posts in the Network, provided that it's not distinctly marked as a voice or video post, how much of the character can we ascertain from any given post? That is, can everyone... see the icons that the character uses? Or is it just text?

I've had people react in different ways to my various intro posts (e.g. people pointing out that wait, Hikaru has a different hair color, although Kaoru didn't make note of it because presumably Kaoru-mun didn't think that the hair was visible through Hikaru's post), and I was just wondering if there was a definitive answer. Or if it's usually left to player discretion.

Thanks~! ♥

After a bit of mod chatter to make sure we're generally on the same page, the answer is "player discretion." XD Etiquette would suggest that it's a good idea to clarify with another mun before acting on an icon/post tag/journal name. In general, we presume that a "higher authority" chooses things like journal names and possibly even icons, but this is really an issue for player discretion.

We'll be adding this to the overall Q&A for the site rollout. Thanks for the question and let me know if you need any more clarification.

Sorry for asking yet another question, but! Things strike me at random times.

So, this hasn't happened in any of my crews yet, but a question about canon characters which are directed to OC applications:

Would there be any way to make a requirement in which, when a canon character is directed to the OC application thread because of lack of canon information or whatnot, the applicant has to contact the members of that crew (perhaps in a [info]poly_tldr post where moderation can be provided, or through emails and the like) to discuss whether or not the application of that character is acceptable with the rest of the crew?

While not all canon-as-OC applications will necessarily hinder a crew, I can't help thinking that, were anyone to app an OC in some of my crews (here's looking at you, Trinity Blood, and your intricacies), I'd like to know in advance and at least have some say in what things can be accepted as Poly "canon" and what things I can veto, as a member of the crew. I think, particularly when a lot of speculation is being done to extend canon information, this is... rather important.

But yeah. Sorry to word vomit over the mods; I don't know if this issue has been discussed before or not, but I really do see it as a potential for problems.

Thanks in advance for your time!

You'll go here and fill out the OC application. We're on an application hiatus at the moment while we revamp some of our organization, linking, and consolidate our rules into the website we linked you to.

OC applications will reopen on Sunday, June 1 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Sorry for the delay. We're trying to update the game to better accommodate our more than 200 players from a setup that's been in existence pretty much from game beginning (when no one anticipated we'd get so big.)

We hope to see your app then.

If a character is already dead and a wandering spirit IN THE SERIES already... would they show up in their physical body when they enter the City? Or can they remain as a wandering ghost?

Without getting into specifics, we can't give you an answer that will apply in every situation. In general, though, the answer would be that it is up to player discretion considering how many dead characters we have in the game.

This is a question about language---since there are so many people here who technically shouldn't be able to communicate, should we assume that part of being in the City is having English crammed into your brain...or do the communicators translate what our characters say when they post? Or some other third thing?

Edited at 2008-05-31 12:03 am UTC

[info]berryfloss

The communicators are typically assumed to do the translation. The deities may want everyone to be able to communicate via the network, but they have no investment in everyone being able to communicate without it. Translation issues can create negative emotion after all.

What about in logs? It seems like there are a lot of them that wouldn't technically go through if the people are speaking different languages.

Just one question that's been bothering me for quite a while...

If a character with on-going canon (y'know those big Shonen Jump series and all that fuzz) who is still alive in their canon, dies in the City, and then in their canon something important happens to them, like new powers and all that w00t, would it be possible for them to leave for a canon update? Or wouldn't they, because they're dead, unless the mun decides to drop them? :x

Sorry if the question is confuzzling, but... it'd be nice if that could be cleared. :x

Once your character is City!Dead, there is no going home. They're stuck in the City, period, which means no sending them home for canon updates. Since death in the City doesn't have the price of being unable to play the character anymore, there has to be some cost, and that's one of them.

Question :).

I've seen a few of the canonically more powerful entities in the city making reference to the idea that they were not pulled here like others, and are not stuck her like others. Is this the case?

Yes. After all, we have God in play as well as several of the Endless. However, it requires of power of about that level and such power is addressed in our power gaming game mechanics page.

I think I remember reading somewhere that NPCs do not come back after 24 hours of death within the city. Is this correct or am I making things up in my head.

If yes, is there an explanation in the City for why this is?

Am I correct in thinking psychic powers can function in the City if what is "sensed" is kept vague, or a player checks for permission before coming up with anything specific?

For example, I'm thinking of a applying for a character that reads the future and tells fortunes by interpreting the meaning of small objects that come from her palms. Readings like: "Visitors and misfortune... an omen of danger." and, "A dream of the past, the four nails that represent repetition; something horrible could be about to happen." What exactly the danger is, or what horrible thing could happen, however, is something she can only guess based on the circumstances at the time.

Would loose premonitions like those be allowed in the game?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]berryfloss
2008-07-13 11:06 pm UTC (link)
Loose premonitions are certainly permitted. We'd appreciate it if your character finds that the curses are too much for her to be able to predict and of course any predictions for another player's character should be done only with the player's okay.

Sure thing! I understand the potential info-mod hazard here, and definitely want to avoid that. Would it be okay for her to tell NPC fortunes if she doesn't pick up anything about player characters or curse events while doing so?
